Jan Spiering

Still and Steady

Jan Spiering (Amsterdam 1937-1994) studied with sculptor Jan van Luijn in Utrecht, followed by a study sculpture  at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam between 1959 and 1965. Piet Esser was his most important teacher there. As an artist Spiering worked autonomously, he worked for the public space, and he was a teacher. His most important position being the one at Rijksakademie, where he worked between 1980-87. He received the Prix de Rome in 1965 for his image The Flight.

The exhibition in the Cabinet shows an overview of some major works in bronze and plaster, combined with a series of small plastics. At the end of the seventies, Spiering also started to paint watercolors. Some examples of these works will also be part of the exhibition. Sculptures that are part of Museum Beelden aan Zee's collecetion will evidently be drawn up as well.

The exhibition is organized in honor of the publication of The Monographs of the Sculpture Institute - part 9, a biography and oeuvre catalog about the life and works of Jan Spiering. A copy will be available in the store for € 23.50.
